tinea

Tinea is a common name given to a fungus infection of the skin that predominately occurs in between toes but can occur anywhere on the foot. It can also be very contiguous and can spread to other members of the family typically via showers. Tinea is sometimes referred to as athletes foot, this term is confusing as it implies that only athletes suffer from this condition which of course is not true.
This condition can cause a great deal of discomfort and can affect an individual's quality of life. The skin involved may be red, swollen and may contain sticky fluid. Patients may also experience a scaly dry rash on the bottom and sides of feet. Some patients also experience cracked painful skin or small clusters of itchy blisters which can occur in circles or in random formation. This type of tinea is called a vesicular tinea pedis. Cracks or "fissures" can occur in between the toes, sometimes with a accompanied soft white scale Symptoms include dry and itchy lesions. Patients often report a burning or stinging sensation. A common associated condition with tinea is a fungal nail infection. If tinea is not treated the lesion can become infected and extremely painful.
Your Podiatrist can correctly diagnose this condition and provide advice on the correct way to treat this condition.
