  • Wash your feet daily Rinse off all soap and dry thoroughly, especially areas between toes.
  • Washing feet in warm water (not hot)
  • Use a Cotton tip to dry areas between the toes.
  • Examine your feet daily skin, soles and areas between toes, if you have any concerns make an appointment with your Podiatrist as soon as possible.
  • Use a mirror or get help from family member or friends if your eyesight is poor.
  • Yearly professional Podiatry check ups, diabetic patients should have 3 to 6 monthly check ups.
  • Check for cracks, sores and painful reddened areas.
  • Trim toenails straight across (don't cut into the corners)
  • Apply cream to your feet (avoiding between the toes)
  • Wear comfortable well-fitting shoes
  • Do not wear socks or stocking that are too short or too tight. It inhibits blood supply to the lower limbs.
  • Shop for shoes later in the day since feet swell by then this will ensure they are not too tight.
  • Orthotic wearers should have their orthotics checked by their Podiatrist every 6 months
  • Limit or quit smoking, it will constrict the blood vessels and decrease blood supply to the lower limbs.
  • Walking is the best exercise for feet.

Avoid the following:

  • Walking barefoot (even indoors or around pools and beaches - the feet need protection)
  • Trimming corns and calluses with a razor
  • Over-the-counter medicated corn and callus removers which may cause skin burns
  • Wearing the same pair of orthotics for more than 5 years
