Flat Feet

Flat feet exhibit little or no arch it may affect one or both feet, although it is more commonly seen in both feet. Most patients have an arch on the inside of their feet. Feet that do not have this arch are generally referred to as having flat feet. Generally when the patient is sitting down they exhibit a normal arch, but on standing or weight bearing the arch flattens out.
This foot type is generally symptomatic at some point in the patients life. It can cause conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, heel spur syndrome, sore knees just to name a few.
When most children are born they exhibit flat feet, this is due to the fact that they have large amounts of fat in the arch area. As time goes on this is reabsorbed, a Podiatrist will be able to look at a child at a young age and determine whether it is fat or if there is a problem with flat feet. If a parent has any doubt they should have their child’s feet professionally assessed. If this problem is caught early enough it can be helped by tri planer wedging or via the use to custom made orthotics.
Many children as they grow with this kind of foot will complain of pain in the legs heel, these pains are often put down to growing. However if they exhibit flat feet this may well be the cause of the pain. No child should have to suffer this pain, if a parent has any doubt they should have their child’s feet properly assessed by a Podiatrist.
