Callus are one of the most common problems seen by a Podiatrist, callus is area of diffuse hyperkeratotic lesion of relatively even thickness, usually found under the metatarsal heads at a site of friction, irritation, and pressure. Unlike corns, the margins of a callus are undefined. This build up of hyperkeratotic skin generally occurs as a result of excess pressure applied to a small area of the foot. It can cause quite an amount of discomfort tot the patient. It is advisable to have these areas professionally removed by a qualified Podiatrist rather than removing it with home type devices such as scrapers pumice stones razor blades as these may result in a severe foot injury. Your Podiatrist will remove this type of skin build up with little or no pain. Your Podiatrist will possibly organise regular visits to keep these areas under control. We will also analyse the pressure areas around your foot which is leading to this type of build up. Sometimes we will use custom orthotics to reduce this type of pressure.
As there are a whole range of problems that can result in a corn or callus, it is often good to consider that they are not really a condition at all, but are a symptom of an underlying condition. your podiatrist may carry out a gait assessment to see if there is something that can be done to reduce or eliminate the development of these hyperkeratotic lesions. Callus that is not treated will become painful as time goes on.
